Meet Melissa Stevenson - Girl Scout volunteer, parent, Gold Award Girl Scout, and Girl Scout alum.
Melissa Stevenson’s Girl Scout experience started 20 years ago. She spent 14 years in Girl Scouts as a child, earning her Gold Award, with her mom by her side. Today, she enjoys making the memories with her own Girl Scout daughter by teaching her the Girl Scout mission – building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.
Her current Girl Scout volunteer roles include co-leader of Daisy Troop 7016 and Junior-Senior Troop 7302. As part of Service Unit 702, she has served as the Service Unit Manager and currently serves as a coach/mentor. She is a council-wide Girl Scout facilitator training other volunteers with New Leader Onboarding, Outdoor 101, and Tent and Cabin training. When not volunteering for Girl Scouts, she serves as the Youth Pastor at First Methodist Church in Abilene, wife to Patrick, and mom to her son, Collin, and daughter, Dorothy, who just earned her Bronze Award and is a member of Girl Scouts Media Corps.
Melissa shares that Girl Scouts has brought “friends, opportunities, and a sense of purpose” to her life. She spends time with her co-leaders weekly, building friendships, traveling with the girls, and showing the girls all the fun and interesting things about their own community.
She encourages new Girl Scout volunteers, especially new leaders, to have a camera handy and always take photos. Just like in sports and school, having photos each year of the girls in their uniforms will become a treasure. “It’s so neat to see them grow up over the years and get to show off their badgework.”
Melissa knows there is a place for every parent/guardian to volunteer in Girl Scouting. She encourages new adults to bring their own passion, special talent, or experience to the table to enhance Troop meetings. “No troop leaders should do the job on their own, and by giving everyone a piece of the pie, it increases ownership and responsibility for the troop to have a great year.”
“We need everyone to jump in and give the girls the best Girl Scout experience we have!”
